Searching For Customers In RVA: Summer Ideas
By: Leah Batten, marketing account manager
Great entrepreneurs and business owners are passionate about growing their companies. They focus everyday on engaging new loyal customers and increasing their overall audience as well as replacing those customers who have disappeared.
According to Forbes Magazine, each year, American companies must replace on average about 10% of their client base for various reasons, including customers who relocate, find new solutions from competitors or customers who no longer have a need for a given product or service.
Every business can benefit from increasing its ability to find new customers but where do you even start?
At Commonwealth PR, we recommend that clients meet their potential customers where they are. Richmond comes alive in the summer. With food festivals to art exhibits to theatre events and music concerts there is something for everyone. People from around the city come out of hibernation and this is your chance to take advantage of some AMAZING marketing and advertising opportunities!
We know businesses come in all shapes and sizes – business to business, business to consumer. Whether it is by sponsorship of the event, advertising in an event program, setting up a booth or table or simply passing out flyers or free samples, check out these summer events below to get your business involved in the Richmond community!
For The Art Lover
If you are looking to attract a customer base that appreciates the eclectic and loves art, look into participating at First Fridays. Downtown Richmond’s long-standing monthly art walk happens year-round on the First Friday of every month, however the summer months are the most popular! Galleries, shops, restaurants, non-profits, food-trucks, and more open their doors in celebration of art and community. Surround yourself with tons of opportunities to expose your business to hundreds of new customers each month!
For The Theatre Buff
Every performance has a program and a captive audience. With summer events like Broadway Under The Stars, Rock of Ages and Bill Maher, at Center Stage, there is something for everyone and possibly where you’ll find your next big customer.
Free and great performances can also be found at On Stage Maymont throughout the summer as well.
Don’t forget about leveraging each of these events and their show’s programs as a way to get your brand in front of their supporters.
For The Music Fanatic
Richmond has become quite the musical refuge. Concert series are popping up all over the city, bringing with them some amazing performers, as well as marketing opportunities.
Friday Cheers, Groovin in the Garden, and Innsbrook After Hours are great outdoor venues with awesome line-ups this summer. Reasonably priced and full of talented musicians, these concert series draw thousands of people each summer and offer plenty of opportunities to reach a wide variety of customers. Oh, and the music isn’t so bad either!
For The Foodie
Staples like the Greek and Lebanese Food Festivals (recently passed) have been part of the Richmond summer calendar for years, each with marketplace tents that offer opportunities to expose your business to a large crowd. Newer upcoming festivals like the 1st Bacon Festival and Broad Appetit, are other platforms that you can use to mine for customers this summer. Obviously, the happier you are the more open you are to trying new things right? And who’s not happy surrounded by bacon?!?!
For The Adrenaline Junkie
Richmond is for Runners. There are so many races throughout the spring and summer months. Small 5K’s as well as larger races attract the outdoor and athletic community. The next large race this summer is the Patrick Henry Half-Marathon, followed by the full Richmond marathon in the fall. Check here for a list of all local races that you might want to get involved in to promote your company.
If you are looking for that extreme adrenaline junkie customer, events like Dominion Riverrock (recently passed – start planning for next year!) the East Coast’s premier outdoor lifestyle festival is a great place to bring exposure to your business.
For The Professionals
There are a ton of entities in Richmond that provide a platform for networking, education and social interaction. The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce has groups like HYPE (for those youngsters out there) and plenty of other events your business might find relevant and help you connect with other professionals. The Retail Merchants Association is another great organization in our community that provides opportunities to expose your business to their members. But don’t forget about Work It, Richmond and Richmond Biz Sense, two excellent online publications that often promote professional activities and networking events around Richmond.
No matter what your business focuses on, the summer brings many opportunities to find new customers. When you know your audience, what they like to eat, drink and do, meeting them where they are is a great idea.
Hey, you might even have some fun along the way!
